el-sao-ayagaures-048 The Gran Canaria government will extend the network of trails and promote the pilgrimage route to Santiago from San Bartolomé de Tirajana to Gáldar, with an investment of 1.2 million euros between this year and next. The estimated number of visitors to the center of the island could grow between 10% and 15%, especially Germans.

The Tourist Board of Gran Canaria found that Germans are more interested in rural tourism and generally while enjoying their stay in Gran Canaria opt for excursions into nature. On internet portals where tourists stick their holiday photos Germans have been found to portray the inner parts of Gran Canaria, while the British photographed the dunes of Maspalomas.

Roberto Moreno (Minister of Tourism) and Juan Salvador León (Minister of the Environment) presented yesterday the first steps of the  Tourism Competitiveness Plan of Gran Canaria, funded by Turespaña, the Autonomous Government and the Gran Canaria Government. The first project, worth 360,000 euros, is the refurbishment of over 2,000 kilometers of existing rural trails on the island. 155,000 euros is also directed to the route of the Camino de Santiago between volcanoes.

Recalling that Gran Canaria is the only island that has its own "Camino de Santiago", Moreno said he would use this Jacobus year to create a map and guide with additional information on the geography, history, accommodations, food and other services, so that tourists can undertake the pelgrim route on foot or on a bicycle.

PATH. The route is 60 kilometers long, with the first stage being Maspalomas to the shrine of Santiago in Tunte (San bartolomé de Tirajana), and from there to Ayacata and Cruz de Tejeda. The second takes you from Tejeda to the church of Santiago de los Caballeros de Gáldar. Además de mejorar la señalización de ese camino rural, se acondicionarán las rutas circulares, que comunican la cumbre con las principales localidades de medianías. Besides improving the rural road signs, paths, connecting the summit with the major towns and villages up in the mountains of Gran Canaria, will be improved.

The plan envisages the preparation of the "Degollada Mirador de Becerra, at a cost of 175,000 euros. In that precinct located between Cruz de Tejeda and Pozo de las Nieves, an interpretation center of the Biosphere Reserve of Gran Canaria will be installed, including an exhibition on the volcanoes of the archipelago, courtesy of La Caja de Canarias.

During the presentation of the plan, the Minister for the Environment expressed doubts about the viability of the proposal to install a cable car between Tejeda and the Roque Nublo.

We're just taking pictures. It's the other nationalities who are the doers. We're just a nation of voyeurs
