Suitable for familes, couples and singles of all ages, Puerto Rico is a lively spot in the south of the island, built along and up the high sides of a valley. For this reason it is not recommended for visitors with walking difficulties unless their accommodation is at the bottom of the valley.
Puerto Rico is at the current end of the GC-1 motorway which links the north and south of the island, including the airport which is around 45 minutes away.
Once on the flat valley floor of the resort there is a clear path from the main Commercial Centre (CC) down to the beach. To get from one to the other on foot will take around 15 minutes. The main CC may not be to everyone's taste but it is the main focus for the resort's lively nightlife and it is packed with shops, bars and restaurants. Generally, the ground level is the busiest part of the CC during the day whilst, at night, the upper level comes to life as the restaurants tout for business.
In the CC you will find bureau de change facilities in a number of banks who have branches here. Note these close in the afternoon after 2 pm. There are other bureau de change facilities which open into the evening; most notable of which is Cristina's at the front of the CC and which normally offers competitive rates of exchange.
Walking away fron the main CC in the direction of the beach (just head past the ubiquitous McDonald's), you can choose to walk through the lush tropical gardens past the popular mini golf and on down to a newly refurbished children's playground. An underpass will take you under the road and you will pass a ticket booth which sells tickets for a number of different excursions ansd trips. Worth remembering if the weather is not too god. You will eventually pass a public lido which charges on entry but is heated during the winter months for those that find the sea too cold. The gardens continue on down towards the beach which is semi circular, gently sloping and ideal for families.
Turning right along the beach will take you to the Puerto Escala which is one of the two marinas in the resort. Cafés and restaurants can be found along the edge of the marina and in the CC Pasarella. At the end of that CC you will come to the beginning of a walkway which takes you, in around 20 minutes, to Playa de Amadores, the next resort round the coast. The views from the clifftop walkway over the ocean are spectacular.
If you turn left at the beach you will eventually come to the second marina, the Puerto Base, and behind, it the area of Porto Novo which contains more accommodation and another CC with further eating and drinking choices.
If you would like to see the resort spread out below in its entirety, head up the West Hill either on foot (for those that are energetic) or by local bus or taxi. At the top you will find the CC Europa but the best views can be had by taking the walkway along the edge of the hill side.
In the resort itself, accommodation mainly consists of apartment complexes up the sides of the valley with some bungalow complexes on the level area at the bottom. If your preference is for upmarket hotel accommodation, you will need to head in the direction of Playa de Amadores both in the resort itself and along the cliff top.
Heading in the opposite direction from the beach, you will find the Atlantida Water Park. It should be noted that this closed in September 2009 and there are no signs of it reopening for the summer season.
If you fancy seeing other local resorts and towns, try taking the one of the regular Glass Bottom Ferries that call at Arguineguín - Anfi - Puerto Rico - Puerto de Mogán. Apart from the undersea views you will see the dramatic coastline from a different viewpoint.
