Overview
At the end of the road running down the east side of the island, sits the pretty port and beach of Mogán. Known locally as "Little Venice"
because of the fact that it is criss-crossed with archway bridged canals, the white-washed houses are covered with bougainvillea in the most vibrant of colours, the streets are lined with palm trees and bird of paradise flowers abound.
Location
Mogán lies at the end of the GC-500, the coast road which continues at the end of the GC-1 motorway linking north and south of the island. The road beyond Puerto Rico hugs the cliffs and the views over the ocean are spectacular. Mogán is around 1 hour from the island's main airport.
In Detail
Surrounded by restaurants, bars and shops, the purpose built residential centre of Mogán is pedestrianised, making it ideal for whiling away the time with a cool drink, watching the world go by.
The south-facing, semicircular beach is safe for bathing and is well protected from the Atlantic wind and currents. The beach is of fine,
clean, pale sand with stunning shallow blue water - a safe bathing haven for all the family. There are canoes and pedalos for hire on the beach along with sun beds and parasols. The promenade separates the beach from the recently built up area immediately behind the front line of souvenir shops, restaurants and bars.
You can take a pleasant stroll round to the marina which also continues to function as a
working port.
Every Friday morning, Mogán holds a market, where you can purchase pottery, clothes, leather goods, fruit and vegetables and a wide selection of African artifacts.
Accommodation
The choice of accommodation ranges from one bed-roomed apartments usually above or attached to bars and restaurants, to the luxury of the Cordial Playa 4 star hotel offering all inclusive and full board tariffs. Most accommodation is not more than 10 minutes from the beach.
Attractions
Head inland by bus or taxi to Pueblo de Mogán which is the administrative centre of the municipality of the same name. You will find a choice of restaurants and bars amongst the dramatic mountain scenery.
See some more of the island by taking the ferry from the harbour and head to Puerto Rico, Anfi and Arguineguín back along the coast.
Also in the harbour you will find the Yellow Submarine Underwater Tour which provides a glimpse of the undersea world of the sea around the resort.
