Here's a run down of the theatres on the island.

Las Palmas

Teatro Perez Galdos

Plaza de Stagno, 1.

An outstandingly important theatre in Europe, the Perez Galdos contains priceless murals by Nestor de la Torre, and has an auditorium of exceptional beauty.

It was dedicated to the memory of the Las Palmas born writer Benito Perez Galdos (1843-1920), in 1901. His play Electra" was premiered here in 1888 (when the incomplete theatre was known as Teatro Tirso de Molina), with the help of the celebrated tenor Stagno, to raise funds for the families of those killed on the ship South-America, that was wrecked in waters of the Puerto de la Luz.

In the early morning of 29th June 1918, a fire completely destroyed the first building. On the same site the mayor Federico Leon, commissioned the design of the replacement to the architect Miguel Martin Fernandez de la Torre, and the internal decoration to his brother Nestor. It is to this prestigious artist and painter that we owe all the stained glass windows, the central skylight and, most of all, the murals.

The main room inside the building is dedicated to the musician and composer frances Camilo Saint-Saens, who enjoyed several long seasons in the city. At the top of the façade a sculpture commemorates Galdenese artist Borges Linares.

An extensive programme of development in recent years saw the nearby motorway being diverted underground, the stage demolished and rebuilt (together with new dressing and band rooms) on a larger scale with an increased capacity for flying scenery. This has put it at the forefront of the most prestigious tour Opera, musical and drama productions.

Teatro Guiniguada

C/ Mesa de Leon.

This was one of the main touring theatres of the capital until 2003 when an extensive programme of refurbishment began. The theatre is currently undergoing an extensive if lengthy programme of restoration and construction. It is hoped that it will reopen in early 2011. The new look theatre will seat 450 and has been given an enlarged stage by making the orchestra pit smaller. Dating from the 1920's/30's the Guiniguada is located at the principal axis of a large office and apartment block, in a pleasant square near to the Cathedral.

Teatro Cuyas

C/ Viera y Clavijo.

This is a modern conversion of a former cinema and now takes the bulk of the drama and dance in Las Palmas.

Teatro de Títeres Bolina y Bambo

S.L. Federico Viera, 41

Santa Lucia

Teatro Victor Jara

C/ Victor Jara, Santa Lucia.

A modern studio theatre attached to a drama school, in a lovely tree lined square in this small inland town.

Arucas

Teatro-Cine Rosales

C/ Suarez Franchy 7, Arucas.

A splendid 1940's cinema, the façade lined with neon, which appears to have closed. As a large auditorium, the Teatro Rosales attracted some of the big name entertainment to this old and unspoiled town. Hopefully it will soon reopen.

Teatro Neuvo

A puzzling situation here. Despite being listed on websites and clearly marked on tourist maps of the town, I cannot believe that this has staged a performance in decades! Apparently dating from the late 19th early 20th century, only the long two-story foyer block exists. The tall (the land slopes away steeply at the rear) auditorium was either never completed or suffered a catastrophe many years ago as it is now a roofless ruin. Any further information is welcomed.

San Bartolomé de Tirajana,

Casa de la Cultura Pancho Guerra"

This was opened in 1977 in the centre of the town, just behind the Town Hall. It seems to be more of a community centre these days; certainly there seemed to be no entertainment" advertised.

Playa del Ingles

Auditorium Las Tirajanas

Dirección: Plaza de las Convenciones s/n, Urbanización Las Meloneras.

Opened as part of the Palacio de Congresos in 2000 this 850 seat steeply raked theatre with a full stage was rebuilt in 2005.img/wiki_up//0502GCPdIAuditorium (12).JPG

Casa de Cultura de Maspalomas

Avenida de Tejeda

A functional auditorium which is nevertheless very comfortable, with approximately 400 well padded tip-up seats in the stalls and small balcony. The Casa de Cultura presents a year round season of concerts, films and stage shows from visiting artistes. It can be found next to the Library in the San Fernando district of Playa de Ingles.
