Overview
Playa Del Inglés (PDI) is the largest and liveliest resort on the island of Gran Canaria.
Don't go the resort expecting to see Spanish old world charm. This is a purpose built resort whose success is confirmed by the way that is sprawls along the shoreline. If you are looking however for a holiday in almost guaranteed year round sun with lively nightlife on hand then this could be the place for you.
Location
Sitting just back from the GC-1, the main north-south motorway, PDI is easily and quickly reached when coming by road from the airport. The journey will take around 30 minutes either by car or bus.
In Detail
The resort is virtually triangular in shape bounded to the north by the motorway, to the east by the ocean and to the west by the escarpment which divides PDI from the neighbouring resort of Maspalomas.
Most of the resort is on a plateau but the hill is fairly steep leading to the beach. However, once you have got there you will see the golden sand
stretching into the distance both ways. Indeed, it is possible to walk along the shore for a few kilometres by-passing the famous Dunes. In doing so, you can leave the busy beach behind and find somewhere a bit more secluded. For most of the length of the beach you will find kiosks selling cold drinks and ice cream. Back at the busy part of the beach there are plenty of restaurants (including a McDonald's), bars and shops along the promenade.
Finding your way around PDI can be bewildering at times due to the network of roads winding between the many bungalow complexes. However, interspersed at regular intervals are the Commercial Centres where the bulk of the resort's entertainment and restaurants can be found. The largest of these is the Yumbo Centre which also happens to be the place where most of the gay bars and clubs can be found. Not too far away you will find the Kasbah andthe Cita centres, to name a few. All of these come to life later in the evening and many establishments stay open until the wee small hours.
To the rear of PDI is the district of San Fernando which is mostly residential and where prices in the shops tend to be lower. You will find much larger supermarkets in San Fernando where the range of goods on sale is much wider. Those looking to save a bit of money when self catering may choose to stock up in San Fernando rather than pay the higher prices in the resort.
Accommodation
From high rise apartments, quiet bungalow complexes to up market hotels, you will be spoilt for choice in PDI.
