The 38th annual Guía cheese festival is next Sunday (April 26) in Santa María de Guía old town in north-west Gran Canaria, but the 3rd annual Valasequillo strawberry festival is on the same day. What's a Gran Canaria foodie to do?

Despite the clash, foodies can have their strawberry cheesecake and eat it; the Guía event is repeated on Sunday May 3rd in Montaña Alta (Upper Guía).

Active cheese lovers can join in on Saturday 25 in Guía as there's a fun run through cheese country and a traditional dance with over 100 couples in the evening.

Cheesy Sunday

This Sunday 26, the traditional food and handicrafts market, in and around the main Guía square, starts at 10 am. There's a cheese tasting and cheese competition at the Casa de la Cultura on Calle Canónigo Gordillo just around the corner at 11 am, and a tasting tunnel all morning (featuring cheesy recipes of course).

Sunday's events are repeated in Montaña Alta (Upper Guía) the following Sunday May 03 along with a demonstration of traditional shepherding arts and a gofio and milk tasting (don't all queue up at once).

Strawberry Sunday

With over 1000 kg of strawberries for tasting, a chocolate fountain and a strawberry dessert competition, the Valsequillo festival is perfect if you have a sweet tooth.

Active strawberry lovers can join guided walks through strawberry farms. These leave the church square at 10,11 and 12 am. Tastings, kid's activities and live music start at 11am. Show cooking demonstrations at midday.

See this Canary News article for details of the strawberry festival.
