Viña Frontera: Great Value El Hierro White Wine

Excellent value Viña Frontera from El HIerro Excellent value Viña Frontera from El HIerro

El Hierro's best-known wine and a fantastic value dry white that everyone who visits Gran Canaria should buy and try.

The 2014 Viña Frontera seco sells for below eight euros while the semisec in the blue bottles is under six euros. The semi in particular is one of the best value wines on the shelves (including Spanish whites). There really is no need to buy imported whites in the price bracket while this is on the shelves.

Viña Frontera is made on El Hierro island and the grapes are local varietals grown on lots of small farms all over the island. Every is picked by hand and goes to the cooperative on everything from mopeds to donkeys.

The wine is straw yellow and has a slight fruity aroma with herby and aniseed hints. In the mouth, it's light and fresh with acidity balanced by fruity notes. Because it's made from grapes grown on lots of little terraces we find that there's some variety between bottles. We've a had a couple with definite pineapple flavours.

The semiseco version is in a blue rather than green bottle and is a fantastic option if you prefer your wines a little sweet. It's got serious pineapple flavours.

A good wine to drink ice cold with a seafood lunch. The only problem is that the tall bottle doesn't fit into lots of resort fridges.
